Adopt a Cat

Listed below are the cats currently available for adoption at NAHS. Kittens under the age of 5 months are typically not listed because they find new homes quickly. If you're interested in kittens under the age of 5 months, please call the shelter for more information. The list of available cats is updated frequently, so please check the site often. For more information our adoption process, click here. Bagheera 7Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Do you know that the first part of my name means tiger in Hindi? I think that is pretty cool; after all, I am a distant relative of the tiger. You Disney fans should recognize my name. Think carefully… in what movie does my name appear? While you're thinking of the answer, how about letting me sit in your lap and give you a sample of what it would be like if you took me home.  I like to be petted when I ask for it, and I might enjoy living with another gentle cat. If there are children in my new home, I think it's okay if they're on the younger side (maybe around 5?). I'm a pretty gentle guy, but kids need to understand how cats should be treated. I can be quite the conversationalist, so stop on by so we can chat.

Bugsy 13Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Just because I'm 13 doesn't mean I'm not still a busy guy. First, I need to check out what's happening out the window. Next, I'll see if any closets need looking into. Finally, I'll move on to help you while you're working at the computer, or whatever else you might be doing. And then there are my naps -- I can't be late for those! I always have time, however, for hanging out with you! I'm affectionate, snuggly, and gentle! I do like some toys, but I like it best when you can play with me. Having someone to care for me who's not away from home very much is my dream. Are you that person? Visit with me, and you just might realize that you and I are meant to be.

Captain and Eddie 7Y 5M Domestic Shorthair Male Available Front

Life sure can be rough sometimes! Our family recently decided to move, and for some reason, they left us here instead of taking us with them. That's not how family works, is it? We've been through a lot, so we are looking for a family who will be patient and understanding, as it may take us a little while to feel safe and comfortable again. We do enjoy being petted and we like to play with toy mice and catnip. Children frighten us, so we would do best in a home with adults only. We have lived together our whole lives, and must go together to our new home, but, hey, two lovable kitties are better than one!

Chelsea 5Y 6M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I'm a pretty laid back girl, happy to curl up in a nice warm bed and take a nap.  When I'm feeling playful, I enjoy laser pointers and chasing after strings.  My favorite thing though is being scratched underneath my chin and behind my ears.  It would be best if children in my new home were at least 8 years old, since really young kids seem to stress me out.  I'd probably be happiest as the only pet in the house so I can soak up all the attention myself. If a mellow girl is what you're looking for to complete your family, stop by and meet me soon!

Dreamsicle 5Y 7M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

So you think I'm named Dreamsicle only because I'm orange? That's part of it, but the other reason is that I literally could have frozen to death. Someone put me in a box, sealed that box with tape, and put me on a street corner in Chicago… oh, did I forget to mention that is was negative 2 degrees outside? Then, through a series of fortuitous events, I ended up at NAHS. Believe me, I'm counting my blessings. I've been through a lot, so I'm a little shy and nervous around people I don't know; I just need to know that I can trust you. After I do, I'll be your constant companion. Playing with toys, watching the wildlife from a safe spot inside, and lazy days basking in sunshine are the things my dreams are made of. I would be happiest as the only pet in the family, so I can have all your attention on myself!  I think kids in my new home should be at least 8 years old. Can you help make my dreams come true?

Licorice 9Y 11M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

What's a sweet and handsome guy like me doing here?  Well I'll be honest, I'm not really sure.  I was found in a parking lot and brought to NAHS when nobody claimed me at animal control.  I like being near people and getting attention, but I can be a little shy at first.  One of the quickest ways to my heart is through treats.  Give me one (or two) and I'll be your best friend!  I seem to get along with most other cats but I'm not sure if I've ever met a dog before.  Don't wait too long to come say hi!

Marty 0Y 8M Domestic Shorthair Male Adopted! No

With a name like Marty, you might not know if I'm male or female. Make no mistake, I'm all boy… a rough-and-tumble young guy. I'm curious, outgoing, and super playful. I love all types of toys, and I'm on the go a lot, stopping only to eat and sleep. Sometimes when I play, I can get a little rough. I don't mean to, it just happens when I'm in the zone. Another playful young cat might be really fun to have around and good way for me to expend my energy. Do you have a dog? I'm not sure if I like them, but I'd be willing to meet one and find out.

Midge 2Y 5M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I was found wondering the streets of Chicago when a nice person picked me up and that’s how I ended up here.  Turns out I was pregnant, so I’d say my kittens and I are pretty lucky.  They have all found their new homes, and now it’s my turn!  I can be a bit shy at first, but am friendly and loving once I feel comfortable with you.  Because of this, it would be best if my new home was on the quiet side to help me feel more confident.  If there’s another cat in the home, I would prefer them also be calm.  I don’t think I have ever met a dog, but I’ve heard they can be quiet loud.  It would also be good if children were older and had experience with cats.  I know in the right home with the right family I’ll get more confidence.  The question is, are you that family?

Rosie 13Y 6M Domestic Longhair Female Available Front

Isn't it sad when someone you love gets sick? That's what happened to me… my favorite human in the whole world got sick, and I had to come here so I could find a new home.  I'm shy, gentle, and cuddly, and I think the best type of home atmosphere for me would be calm and quiet. I do scare easily, so a lot of activity and noise are not for me. Every now and then, I do like to play with toy mice, and I don't mind it if you need to brush me. Since I have longer hair, brushing is a necessity. I know I'm an older girl, but I hope you don't let that stop you from welcoming me into your home. Please consider me!

Sophie 8Y 6M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I had a nice home, a warm and loving environment, but through a series of unfortunate events, I ended up at the shelter.  It was no ones fault, but here I am.  So now I'm searching for a new forever home with a nice warm bed that I can curl up in, and maybe a big window so I can look outside.  I can be a little shy in new situations, so my new family will need to understand it might take me a while to become comfortable in the home.  I get along with some cats, but I don't think I've met a dog, but I've heard they can be loud and I think I would prefer a quiet home.  So now that you know a little about me, stop by the shelter and learn more!
