Adopt a Cat

Listed below are the cats currently available for adoption at NAHS. Kittens under the age of 5 months are typically not listed because they find new homes quickly. If you're interested in kittens under the age of 5 months, please call the shelter for more information. The list of available cats is updated frequently, so please check the site often. For more information our adoption process, click here. Bridget 2Y 5M Domestic Shorthair Female Available

All I need is 24 hours in my new home and I'll be up on all the gossip.  Beware, though, that I might spill some of your secrets. I'm a good listener, but an even better talker. So, if you're searching for a quiet kitty to complete your family, sorry, but I'm not that girl. Besides talking, I like to play with toys, run, jump and eat. Oh, and did I mention I like to eat? (Get the picture?) I love my food, and I do require a special prescription diet… one for cats with sensitive stomachs. I might like to live with another cat, but I don’t know for sure, and I've never met a dog. C'mon and check me out!

Catarina 4Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

Some people might say that I'm a stereotypical cat, coming to you when I want attention.  What's wrong with being the stereotypical cat?  I just ask that I'm not bothered while I'm sleeping.  I'm generally pretty calm, but when the mood strikes me, I like to chase little mouse toys. I don't mind some other cats, but I'm not too sure about dogs; if you ask me, they're big, clumsy, noisy, and they smell weird.  I think children in my new home should be at least 8 years old.

Emma 3Y 4M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I was found wondering the streets of Chicago and thanks to the nice people at NAHS, I get a second chance at finding my forever home. I am a sweet cat that LOVES to be petted. I can probably live with another cat, and maybe even a gentle dog. Children in my new home should be older since I can still be unsure about new situations. If I sound like the cat you're looking for, stop by and say hi soon!

Fifi 7Y 4M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

Bonjour mes amis! My name is Fifi, and I am one sweet girl who enjoys being adored and pampered by my human companions. When the mood strikes, I can be quite playful and sometimes rambunctious, especially if catnip and mouse toys are involved. Please don't ask me to share my new home with other pets -- I really don't care for them. It's all about me; can you blame me for wanting you all to myself? If there are children in my new home, I think it's best if they're at least 8 years old.

Gypsy 6Y 0M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

Hi there, my name is Gypsy! Don't you just love my unique coloring? I think it gives me a lot of character. I came to NAHS because my owners didn't have enough time for me, so now I'm looking for a family that is going to give me all the love and attention I deserve. I can be a bit shy at first, but once I warm up to you I am very affectionate and playful. I might be okay living with another friendly, mellow cat and a calm, gentle dog might be fine as well. Because I can be a little shy at first, I think children in my new home should be at least 5 years or older.

Helen 11Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Female Available All Four

I came to NAHS because my previous owners were moving and could not take me with.  One very unique thing about me is that I am deaf.  I don't let this stop me from living my life.  My previous owners said that I am friendly, affectionate, and playful.  I really enjoy playing with toys and like to carry them around with me.  I can be shy around new people though so it would be best if my new home had a quiet and calm atmosphere. I do require a special diet to help keep my hyperthyroid issues in check.

Jack 1Y 7M Domestic Shorthair Male Adopted! No

There are so many unique things about me (I think), but the most obvious one is my color. What would you call it? I think it's kind of a dark chocolate. Go ahead and admire me for a while to see what you think. More about me: I'm pretty gentle and affectionate, and when the mood strikes me, I like to play. Chasing things and feather wand toys are interesting. It's all about the hunt and capture. While there were no children or other animals in my previous home, I'd probably be okay with young kids and perhaps even another gentle cat. I've never met a dog (at least I don't think I have), so I don't know how I feel about them. Don't waste any time … hurry in to meet me!

Kitty 3Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

Come closer and you'll see that I'm a polydactyl cat, also known as a Hemingway cat. What does that mean? It means I have extra toes. It looks as if I have thumbs! Don't worry, though. I can't open jars or doors… at least I don't think I can. I'm very friendly, but I can be shy in new situations. I hope my new family will understand how stressful change can be for cats. I enjoy being adored and doing normal cat things: eating, sleeping, playing, and watching what's going on outside from a safe inside perch. I also like to read Hemingway, for obvious reasons.

Lady Elaine 5Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Female Available No

I'm Lady Elaine!  It's a regal name for an elegant girl like me.  I'm pretty easygoing and will do best in a nice quiet home where I can relax and find a comfortable spot to nap.  I may be okay with another cat but I don't know how I'd do with a dog.  I will add a touch of elegance to any home I go in!

Loretta 2Y 3M Domestic Shorthair Female Available

If it weren't for the kindness of strangers, I might not be here (or anywhere) to tell my story. I was found in an Oklahoma cornfield nursing a litter of newborn kittens. When I came to NAHS (after a long ride with a bunch of dogs), I'd really never had anyone to care about me. It's taken me a while to get used to attention, but sometimes I even ask for it now. I need a very patient, understanding family who willl let me get used to new surroundings on my own schedule. Going to a new home where nothing is familiar to me will be stressful and scary. When I'm comfortable and trusting, I'm quite playful and curious. I'd be best in a calm home with older kids.

Topher 1Y 0M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Like the actor for whom I'm named, I enjoy the spotlight and the accolades, but when I'm overwhelmed by the situation, I might take a step back and watch from afar. I enjoy playing, eating, sleeping, watching the birds outside from the safety of my own home, and attention from my humans. And, while I've never lived with another cat, it's possible I would like it. It might be nice to have a pet of my own. (tee hee)! I'm quiet and very tidy -- I'm no trouble at all. The only way for me to prove that to you is for you to give me a forever home. C'mon, what's stopping you?

Waldo 6Y 1M Domestic Shorthair Male Available No

Where's Waldo? I'm here… the orange tabby wearing the brown collar. I don't have to worry about blending in with the crowd, because in my opinion, I'm one in a million. I was found wandering the streets of Chicago, all alone, just wanting someone to care for me. I'm very thankful now to have a safe place to be and nothing to worry about. I'm a pretty gentle guy, and my idea of a great day would be bird watching (from inside the house), sleeping in the sun, having a bite to eat, nudging you for some pets, and repeating. I am FIV positive, but that doesn't mean I can't live a normal life. My stress level should be kept as low as possible, and I should definitely have yearly vet visits. If you're lucky enough to welcome me into your family, please don't dress me in a red and white stiped shirt.  LOL!
